Frequently Asked Therapy Questions

What can we expect from couples therapy?
Sessions are 50 – 75 min long, but we can negotiate a longer time if schedules allow. The 1st session is an assessment where we gather background information from you and your partner. The 2nd and 3rd sessions, usually meet with partners individually to understand your relationship histories. Starting the fourth session, we bring couples back together again to track your interaction patterns. There may be times we might request to meet individually with one or both of you again if issues come up that impact your ability to feel safe and vulnerable in the relationship.

What if my partner is hesitant about coming in?
We provide both individual and couple counseling. It is almost always best when couples come to sessions together and this is a strong recommendation. If you have a concern for your relationship and your partner is reluctant or unwilling to come, it is possible to make changes on your own. A systemic approach recognizes that changes in one part of the system will affect the rest of the system.

Does insurance cover couples counseling?
Most insurance plans do not cover couples counseling. However, it’s best that you contact your insurance company directly to learn about your mental health/behavioral health benefits. You can ask specifically about “couples counseling”. We can provide a "super bill" in case your insurance provider does elect to reimburse you.

What if one of us is out-of-town or travels a lot?
In cases where it is difficult for one or both partners to make it to weekly sessions, we offer a more intense option of treatment sometimes known as “intensive couples therapy”. This is usually TWO back-to-back 50-min sessions with a 15-min break in between.

 What is your cancellation policy?
If you do not show up for your appointment, and you have not notified our office 48 hours in advance, you will be expected to pay for the cost of the missed session. The fee for services is waived if you need to cancel due to an emergency.
